European Football Championship, 2016

 

In 2016, for the third time in the history of European football, the host country for the European Championship will be France. From June 10th to July 10th stadiums in Paris, Marseilles, Nice, Bordeaux, and other French cities will host tens of thousands of fans from all over Europe – and, possibly, from all over the world. The winner of this championship will take part in the Confederations Cup, which will be held in Russia in the summer of 2017 under the aegis of FIFA.

 

The qualifying round for Europe’s main football event ended in November 2015. There were 53 teams taking part, 23 of which won tickets to the championship finals, while France itself will take the 24th place as the host nation.

 

Both the opening match and the final of the UEFA championship will take place at the Stade de France in Paris, a majestic stadium with a capacity of 81,000. This is where the tournament will be opened and closed by popular DJ David Guetta, who is currently creating the championship’s official hymn, entitled ‘This One’s For You’. In addition to holding sports events, the stadium is a regular venue for major stars. The Rolling Stones, U2, Madonna, and Metallica have played here at various times. Paris is a favourite with organizers of large-scale events due to its location, beauty, and amazing cultural monuments; its stereotype as, first and foremost, a romantic city is effectively challenged by the large number of sports events which are held here each year.
