Don’t miss a visit to a self-proclaimed, unofficial Republic of Uzhupis, known also as Vilnius’ Montmartre, the area of bohemian artists and people with a sense of humour (who celebrate their Independence Day on the 1st of April). Vicinities of Vilnius offer trips to Geographical Centre of Europe (26 km north) and to Trakai, the old capital of Grand Lithuanian Duchy. The present city of Trakai, dwelling on a peninsula and surrounded by lakes on three sides, is the centre of Trakai Historical National Park and a favourite tourist spot. Red brick Trakai Island castle beautifully located in the middle of the lake, recalls to the Middle Ages when Lithuania for two centuries resisted the invasion of German knights. (Karaims, descendants of Turkish nations, brought from the Crimea in the 14th century, inhabit Trakai to this day.)
